Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi)

The chaste bond of love between a brother and a sister is one of the deepest and noblest of human emotions. 'Raksha Bandhan' or 'Rakhi' is a special occasion to celebrate this emotional bonding by tying a holy thread around the wrist. This thread, which pulsates with sisterly love and sublime sentiments, is rightly called the ‘Rakhi’. It means 'a bond of protection', and Raksha
Bandhan
signifies that the strong must protect the weak from all that’s evil.

The ritual is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan, on which sisters tie the sacred Rakhi string on their brothers' right wrists, and pray for their long life. Rakhis are ideally made of silk with gold and silver threads, beautifully crafted embroidered sequins, and studded with semi precious stones.

The Social Binding

This ritual not only strengthens the bond of love between brothers and sisters, but also transcends the confines of the family. When a Rakhi is tied on the wrists of close friends and neighbors, it underscores the need for a harmonious social life, where every individual co-exist peacefully as brothers and sisters. All members of the community commit to protect each other and the society in such congregational Rakhi Utsavs, popularized by the Nobel laureate Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.

The Friendly Knot

It won’t be wrong to say the fashionable friendship band in vogue today is an extension of the Rakhi custom. When a girl feels a friend of the opposite sex has developed a kind of love too strong for her to reciprocate, she sends the guy a Rakhi and turns the relationship into a sisterly one. This is one
way of saying, "let’s just be friends", without hurting the other person's soft feelings for her.

The Auspicious Full Moon

In Northern India, Rakhi Purnima is also called Kajri Purnima or Kajri Navami, when wheat or barley is sown, and goddess Bhagwati is worshipped. In Western states, the festival is called Nariyal Purnima or the Coconut Full Moon. In Southern India, Shravan Purnima is an important religious occasion, especially for the Brahmins.

Raksha Bandhan is known by various names: Vish Tarak - the destroyer of venom, Punya Pradayak - the bestower of boons, and Pap Nashak - the destroyer of sins.

Rakhi in History

The strong bond represented by Rakhi has resulted in innumerable political ties among kingdoms and princely states. The pages of Indian history testify that the
Rajput and Maratha queens have sent Rakhis even to Mughal kings who, despite their differences, have assuaged their Rakhi-sisters by offering help and protection at critical moments and honoured the fraternal bond. Even matrimonial alliances have been established between kingdoms through the exchange of Rakhis.

History
has it that the great Hindu King Porus refrained from striking Alexander, the Great because the latter’s wife had approached this mighty adversary and tied a Rakhi on his hand, prior to the battle, urging him not to hurt her husband.

Why Rakhi?

Rituals like Rakhi, there is no doubt, help ease out various societal strains, induce fellow-feeling, open up channels of expression, give us an opportunity to rework on our role as human beings and, most importantly, bring joy in our mundane lives.

“May all be happy

May all be free from ills

May all behold only the good

May none be in distress.”

This has always been the idea of an ideal Hindu society.

Sanjay Dutt sentenced to 6 years in prison

Actor Sanjay Dutt has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for six years for illegal possession of weapons that were given to him by associates of gangster Dawood Ibrahim ahead of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

Dutt, who spent 16 months in prison after his arrest in April 1993 and was free on bail, was also fined Rs 25,000 by the special TADA court of Judge P D Kode.

The court rejected Dutt's application seeking exemption from a prison term under the Probation of Offenders (POA) Act.

Dutt, who was seated in the back of the court when the sentence was announced, was visibly shocked as the judge gave the reasoning for his decision not to grant him relief under the POA Act.

After pronouncing the sentence, the court cancelled the bail granted to Dutta and told police to take him into custody.

Dutt was convicted in November last year under the Arms Act for the illegal possession of a 9mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle but was acquitted of more serious terrorism charges under the stringent TADA law.

Initially, the court granted Dutt's associate Rusi Mulla benefit under the POA Act but then announced that the actor and two others would not be eligible to get relief under the same law.

The court observed that Dutt had not merely committed a criminal act but also told three others to commit criminal acts on his behalf.

After a court clerk read out the sentence, Dutt was seen chatting with fellow convicts and friends Yusuf Nulwalla and Kersi Adajania.

While Yuusf Nulwalla has been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for five years under the Arms Act for aiding Dutt to dispose of AK-56 rifle.

Dutt, who spent 18 months in jail in two spells during the trial, was convicted under sections 3 and 7 read with section 25(1-A)(1-B) of the Arms Act, for possessing an AK-56 rifle and a 9mm pistol.

Trial of Mumbai serial blasts case ends

The curtains came down on Tuesday on the marathon and sometimes dramatic trial of the 1993 serial blasts case with the sentencing of the last of the 100 convicts, including Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt.

The trial, which began in 1994 in a high-security makeshift courtroom in Arthur Road Jail, saw 12 people being awarded death sentences -- the highest in any single criminal case.

Yaqub Memon, a brother of the blasts mastermind Tiger Memon, was among the dozen given capital punishment.

Twenty others were sentenced to life imprisonment by Judge P D Kode, who took over the case from Judge J N Patel in 1996.

A total of 123 people were named as accused in the case and 100 of them were convicted.
Of the convicts, 47 were charged with -- among other things -- being party to the conspiracy to carry out the deadly blasts on 12th March, 1993 that killed 257 people and injured 713.
The CBI, which took over the probe into the attacks 10 months after the blasts rocked the megapolis, had sought the death penalty for 44 conspirators, including three members of the Memon family -- Tiger Memon's brothers Yaqub, Essa and Yusuf.
Judge Kode sentenced Essa and Yusuf to life imprisonment in view of their ill-health.
Kode, who has reportedly not missed a single day of work till June this year, when he slipped in his bathroom and fractured his arm, became the only judge to get an insurance cover of Rs 25 lakh in view of the sensitivity of the case.
He also enjoys Z-category security cover.

Vista Hacked Again, This Time Even More Effectively

This is not the first time DIGG mentioned a Windows Vista crack, and it won't be the last, but now a hacker group known as NoPE somehow managed to create a cracked Windows Vista DVD that works immediately, out of the box, with no serial number or activation keys required. Just like some of those corporate versions of Windows XP that worked for years, the hacked Vista product appears to be already activated and it even automatically updates itself with the latest patches.
The cat and mouse game continues, where Microsoft will counter this, and then the hackers will respond, and so on, and so on. Of course, activation schemes, digital rights management and
security measures only affect the honest people, inconveniencing them and sometimes even stopping them in their tracks, while the h4ck3rz rise to the challenge every time with their formidable sk1llz. Sigh

Gamer Shot While Saving Woman

Amidst all the stories of school shootings, "rampages," and generally how evil games and gamer are, you rarely hear about the good things gamers do, or the peaceful lives most lead...until one gets shot.

Adam Mapleson is a gamer. Adam Mapleson is a hero. The 24-year old U.K. man was shot yesterday as he came to the rescue of a woman who was being robbed in the subway. Currently, he is in serous but stable condition.

According to Adam's Myspace page, he is an avid gamer, as well as listening to the heaviest of metal. Here's a snippet from his "interests" section:

Computer Games (Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Source, Neverwinter Nights, FEAR, Vampire Bloodlines, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, GTA: San Andreas, Prince Of Persia, Pro Evo Soccer 6, Madden 2007, UT2004, Dawn of War, Mark of Chaos)

So much for the "evils" of the modern day.

GameWad wishes you a speedy recovery, Adam, and would love to rock some CS: Source with you someday.

Screenshots of YouTube's New Player

YouTube tests a new version of its player that will improve the way you interact with videos and will create a cinematic experience.
The will add a feature that was already available in Google Video: jump to any part of the video even if the video isn't fully downloaded.

For each video, you'll be able to see around ten related videos. You don't have to wait until the video ends to play a new one because they're available as thumbnails if you hover over the video. The effect is similar to the dock from Mac OS X. You can also click on the two arrows to go to the previous / next video.

The "menu" button gives you access to the embedding code or to the URL of the YouTube page that shows the video. If you click on the button, the video is smoothly minimized in the left corner and it continues to play.

Ubuntu Plans Mobile Linux Version

Ubuntu Linux developers plan to extend its open-source software development to handheld Internet-enabled devices.
Developers meeting at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, which runs through the end of this week in Seville, Spain, will discuss details of the new Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project, announced on Saturday.
Ubuntu programmers will develop a mobile version of their Debian-based Linux operating system in collaboration with Intel Corp., which plans a new low-power processor and chipset architecture designed to allow full Internet capability on mobile devices, according to a statement published on the
Ubuntu Web site.
The move to offer a mobile and embedded version comes on the heels of a similar project that Intel is supporting: the Gnome Mobile & Embedded Initiative (GMAE), announced April 19 at the Embedded Linux Conference in Santa Clara, California. The initiative is open to developers, manufacturers and others interested in developing mobile device applications based on Gnome-based open-source components.
The summit is being organized by Canonical Ltd., the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu. South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth initiated the project to create Ubuntu, based on Debian GNU/Linux, and founded Canonical in 2004. Canonical offers usage and basic support of the operating system for free, and additional services on commercial terms.
Overall, Ubuntu Linux appears to be gaining traction among users. Last week, Dell Inc. announced plans to preload Ubuntu Linux on its upcoming Linux desktop PCs and laptops. The company said the decision came in response to a customer feedback program that registered high interest in Ubuntu Linux.
Canonical will provide Dell with support services.
The free, open-source operating system runs on notebook and desktop computers as well as thin clients and servers.
Challenges facing developers of the mobile edition include the design of innovative graphic interfaces and power management capabilities, according to the posting on the Ubuntu Web site.
The mobile edition is slated for release in October, together with the new Ubuntu 7.10 version.
Although the use of Linux in smartphones is still comparatively low, accounting for only around 6 percent of the market for smartphone operating systems in 2006, demand for open source will increase as more handset makers move away from older proprietary phone operating systems, Nick Spencer, an analyst with Canalys.com Ltd., said in an earlier interview. Spencer expects demand to be strong in Asia, particularly in China.

NOKIA N95 a CNET Review 7/10

The good: The Nokia N95 cell phone boasts a 5-megapixel camera that produces good-quality photos and videos. It comes with advanced multimedia capabilities and has a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Symbian smart phone also features integrated GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, and an innovative two-way slider design.
The bad: The N95 lacks support for U.S. 3G networks; standby battery life is poor; and performance is somewhat sluggish. The hardware feels a bit cheap, and the sliding mechanism could be more secure. It's also very expensive.
The bottom line: With a 5-megapixel camera, advanced multimedia capabilities, and GPS, there's no doubt that the Nokia N95 is one of the most feature-packed smart phones to date, but poor battery life and sluggish performance makes it hard to justify the high price tag.

AMD reports $611 million loss

Sunnyvale (CA) - Declining microprocessor sales as well as dropping average selling prices for its microprocessors have pushed AMD deeper into the red. The company reported a net loss of $611 million on revenues of $1.233 billion, which is more than 20% below the guidance the company expected at the end of Q4 2006.

The loss includes charges related to the ATI acquisition in the amount of $113 million, but is mainly a result of the increasing competition with Intel in the microprocessor market. The company said that its Q1 margins were 31%, down from 40% in Q4 2006 and down from 59% in Q1 2006. "The decrease from the prior quarter was largely due to significantly lower microprocessor unit shipments, lower microprocessor average selling prices (ASPs), and the inclusion of the former ATI operations, which generally have lower-margin products, for the entire quarter, AMD said.

AMD had revenues of $1.332 billion and a profit of $259 million in Q1 of 2006; in Q4 2006, the company reported revenues of $1.773 billion and an operating loss of $529 million.

"After more than three years of successfully executing our customer expansion strategy and significantly growing our unit and revenue base, our first quarter performance is disappointing and unacceptable," said Robert J. Rivet, AMD's chief financial officer, in a prepared statement. "We are aggressively addressing the issues that led to our significant revenue decline. We are aligning our business model, capital expenditures and cost structure with the goal of accelerating our return to profitability."

In a press release, AMD said that computing solutions group sales were $918 million, down 38% sequentially. "Year-over-year server and desktop processor unit shipments and revenues declined significantly, while mobile processor unit shipments and revenue increased significantly," the firm said.

Last week, AMD warned the financial community that the company would report significantly lower revenues. The company also announced that it plans to restructure its business model to increase operational efficiencies and lower its operating cost structure.

AMD's stock dropped about 2% in after hour trading late Thursday.

Xbox 360 Elite Prone to Same Problems as Others

A Known Companies Hardware Department has numerous reports coming in from users getting 3 red lights on their brand new Elite consoles this week. While this is a daily occurrence with 360 Premium and Core systems, we thought Microsoft would have had a better handle on the situation with the Elite. We’ve all seen the pictures of the motherboard changes. We assumed that these would protect the console better from heat and such to make sure less consoles would die. But alas, no. Microsoft has introduced another new product that is failing at a higher than normal rate.To top it all off, the disc scratching issue is back. Seriously Microsoft, what the hell? Did you completely get rid of your QA department?

Apple iPod Makes 100 Million Mark

Apple Computer has sold its 100 millionth iPod in just five and a half years, making the iPod the fastest selling music player in History. Since the launch of the iPod in November 2005, Apple has introduced more than 10 new iPod models, including five generations of iPod, two generations of iPod mini, two generations of iPod nano, and two generations of iPod shuffle.
Speaking at the momentous occasion, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, said, "iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we are thrilled to be a part of that." Grammy Award winner, Mary J Blige, added, "iPod is more than just a music player, it's an extension of your personality, and a great way to take your favorite music with you everywhere you go." John Mayer, also Grammy Award winner, said, "Without the iPod, the digital music age would have been defined by files and folders instead of songs and albums. Though the medium of music has changed, the iPod experience has kept up the spirit of what it means to be a music lover." All iPod models feature seamless integration with iTunes. The iTunes online music store has a catalog of over five million songs, 350 television shows, and over 400 movies. Reportedly, it has managed to sell over 2.5 billion songs, 50 million TV shows, and over 1.3 million movies, making it the world's most popular online music, TV, and movie store.

Google Pack Adds More Apps

Google has reportedly added some new applications to its Google Pack, including new security options and a fresh way to display photos. The Google Pack is a collection of free essential software including Google Earth, Picasa, and Google Desktop. Using this, users can save on the trouble of finding, installing, and updating software.
The new security options in the Pack include Symantec Norton Security Scan and PC Tools Spyware Doctor Starter Edition. Earlier this week, Symantec had announced an upgraded version of its free Google Pack antivirus offering called Norton Security Scan. Similarly, even PC Tools recently released the 5.0 version of Spyware Doctor, which the company claims to offer a faster scan, better rootkit protection, a lighter overall footprint, and scanning of external volumes like a USB flash drive. In addition, it also supports Vista. Besides, the new Google Pack also features a new way of photo display with Google Photos Screensaver. The photo screensaver turns the screen into a digital picture frame and displays the latest photos and shows images from the computer, Picasa Web Albums, or photo feeds from other photo-sharing sites. With this, now the Google Pack includes a whole set of applications such as Google Earth, Google Desktop, Picasa, Google Toolbar, Google Photos Screensaver, Google Talk and Google Video Player. It also includes the partner software Mozilla Firefox, Adobe Reader, Norton Security Scan, RealPlayer, GalleryPlayer HD Images, Skype and now Spyware Doctor. Google said that the Pack downloads and installs new as well as the other existing applications quickly and easily. Moreover, the Google Updater helps keep the applications updated. Google Pack Beta can be downloaded in 12 languages at http://pack.google.com. It is compatible with Window XP and Vista, and also supports Internet Explorer 6.0 and Firefox 1.0 and higher.

Dell To Sell PCs With Linux

According to reports, Dell has finally agreed on selling select PCs and laptops with pre-installed open source Linux OS. In a statement released on the company's website, Dell said that it has heard its consumers and the first step in this effort is offering Linux preinstalled on select desktop and notebook systems. Further, they plan to expand the Linux support beyond the existing servers and Precision workstation line.
This move, reportedly, is a result of customer feedback and demand. Earlier this year, the company had conducted a survey wherein 1,00,000 people took part and more than 70 percent of survey respondents said they would prefer using a Dell system with a Linux OS for both home and office use. Moreover, a majority of survey respondents said that existing community-based support forums would meet their technical support needs for a tested and validated Linux OS on a Dell PC and indicated that improved hardware support for Linux machines is as important as the distribution offered. Dell said that customers are more concerned about driver compatibility and Linux kernel support than they are about which distribution Dell would choose for its PCs and notebooks. As of now, the company has not released the details as to which PCs and laptops will come with pre-installed Linux and also which version of Linux will be used. Further details including testing and certification efforts and the Linux distribution or distributions, are expected to be available in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, this move by Linux is welcomed by members of the Linux community. Nick Veitch, senior editor of Linux Format magazine, describes this as a significant move. Reportedly, Veitch is of the view that this move sends message in two ways. One is that a major company is confident enough to be able to offer Linux preinstalled on a desktop that sends a signal that Linux is usable to the average user, and secondly, it shows that there is a growing demand for an alternative to Windows. Presently, Dell only offers PCs and laptops with pre-installed Microsoft Windows, but sells servers running Linux.

GTA IV: First Trailer Released

Rockstar Games has released the first Grand Theft Auto (GTA) IV trailer, which can be seen in the You Tube Vedio Below. After going through the trailer, gamers will find Rockstar taking them back to Liberty City that looks like a very accurate representation of New York city. And this time the Liberty City is modeled with an impressive amount of detail, and more full of life than ever.
The day-night cycle has also undergone a major enhancement in this next-generation rendition, with rays of light and shadows moving along with the sun. Besides, the cars and pedestrians have a decent amount of detail. The trailer also introduces what could be the main character in GTA IV - an olive-skinned man with a Russian accent, who deals with people. When asked about the main protagonist, a Rockstar spokesman said that they would like to let the trailer speak for itself. However, they can confirm that all footage in the trailer 'Things Will Be Different' has been captured directly from 720p gameplay running real time in their 'Rage' engine on a next-generation gaming console. However, the new trailer gives no indication of how this game will play compared to others. Meanwhile, more trailers are expected before the release of GTA IV game on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles in October this year.
